Antique Tibetan Gau.
Gaus are reliquary boxes from the Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist sphere.
They are worn suspended on the body, usually around the neck, carrying consecrated protective elements: texts, mantras, images, sacred ancient textiles.
On the front, the syllable “OM” appears on metal. The metal appears to be bronze or copper surrounded by a decorative arch or frame. It is a kind of portable sanctuary. The sides, the strap, and the back pouch are made of leather. The separate pouch is a small complementary amuletic receptacle called “rten” which usually carries a written invocation or mantra and appears sealed.
The era of this gau can be dated to the 19th century.
The gau retains sacred threads inside.
